Cardboard Grade and What It Means for Your Packaging
The phrase "cardboard box" covers an enormous range of materials, structures, and performance levels. A 250 gsm carton holding a 100 g accessory and a 450 gsm lock-bottom box holding a 1.2 kg product are both "cardboard boxes" — but they are very different specifications. Getting the board grade right for your product and distribution context is the most important structural decision before anything visual is considered.
Fancy Cardboard Boxes are produced in SBS clay board from 250 gsm through to 450 gsm, with the grade selected based on your product weight, the structural format, and the retail or transit conditions the box will face. Our team recommends the appropriate grade in the quote rather than defaulting to a standard weight.
Structural Formats Available for Fancy Cardboard Boxes
Straight-tuck end cartons are the most widely used format in retail product packaging — they flat-pack efficiently, assemble quickly on a packing line, and present a clean rectangular profile on shelf. Reverse-tuck end formats suit products that need to be loaded from the top of the box rather than the front. Lock-bottom construction is specified for products over approximately 600 g where the base needs to be mechanically secured rather than tucked. Two-piece tray-and-lid, drawer (sleeve-and-tray), and hanger formats are used where the application calls for a specific opening experience or retail fixture type.
